CGIL Seminar - "Wonders of the deep: Aquaculture breeding"

Upcoming Equine First Aid Course

The University of Guelph will be hosting a hands-on equine first aid course at the ESMRC on Saturday November 5, 2022. Spots are limited, but given enough interest an additional course will be offered. Students interested can contact Sarah Labatt, Manager BBRM Teaching Herd at labatts@uoguelph.ca.

Empirical data on the requirement of dietary indispensable amino acids for adult cats are lacking. Current recommendations for the majority of dietary indispensable amino acids for adult cats are extrapolated from growing kitten studies, with exception of methionine and lysine. The minimum methionine requirement proposed by regulatory agencies is based on one study in which an insensitive technique for mature animals was used.

Camelina oil provides a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are commonly used to support skin and coat health claims in canine and equine diets. Hence, the focus of this thesis is to investigate the effects of dietary camelina oil on skin and coat health outcomes in dogs and horses, in comparison to flaxseed and canola oil. No differences in inflammatory and oxidative marker concentrations, transepidermal water loss, or skin and coat health scores, were observed in animals fed camelina oil vs. flaxseed or canola oil.

Pawanpreet Sing's MSc Defence

Due to the increasing global demand for dietary protein, it is necessary to investigate protein alternatives with regard to both meeting nutritional requirements and environmental impact. Pulse ingredients are an attractive protein alternative used in grain-free or plant-based canine diets. However, in recent years pulses have been speculated to be associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. Therefore, this thesis aimed to investigate the effects of incremental pulse inclusion from 0 to 45% in micro and macronutrient balanced diets on canine cardiac and metabolic health.

Animal Biosciences Career Panel and Networking Event

The Class of ANSC*6110 is pleased to be hosting a career panel and networking event at the Grad Lounge (5th Floor, UC) on Monday, November 28th at 11:30am.  The panel has been carefully selected to fit the interests of graduate students in the department with representatives from Semex, Mad Barn, OMAFRA, Jefo, Grand Valley Fortifiers and Hendrix Genetics. This is a fantastic opportunity for graduate students to learn about careers in the animal agriculture industry and interact with previous graduates from the department.
