We are happy to have Dr. Joana Jacinto, from the University of Bern, presenting for us on Friday, October 17th, 2025. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The presentation title is: “Exploring skeletal disorders in cattle and sheep: a WGS-based framework for diagnosis and classification”
Speaker Biography: Joana Jacinto is a senior clinician and researcher at the Clinic for Ruminants and the Institute of Genetics, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, Switzerland, specialized in bovine herd health management. She graduated with a MSc in Veterinary Medicine from Lusófona University, Portugal, in 2018, with a thesis on autosomal recessive cholesterol deficiency in Holstein calves. She completed her European College of Bovine Health Management (ECBHM) residency (2020–2023) and earned a PhD in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2022, with a thesis on genetic disorders in cattle. Her research combines clinical investigation, genomics, and epidemiology to advance understanding of genetic disorders, health, and welfare in cattle. She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including studies on neuromuscular disorders, congenital malformations, skeletal disorders, and infectious diseases. Dr. Jacinto supervises PhD, DVM, and Master students and is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in ruminant health. She currently works in two major research projects: “Can Hoof Health Be Improved Through Breeding? – Identification of Genetic Variants Influencing Major Hoof Diseases in Swiss Dairy Cattle” and “Analysis of Genetic Disorders and Other Hereditary Traits in Cattle: SWISScow2.0.” In addition, she contributes to international capacity-building initiatives in Africa in the context of One Health, promoting veterinary education, animal health, and sustainable livestock practices.
